When it's time to make some music
But you ain't Bill Monroe
You got to start with something
Something you can show
Got to have a guitar
Start with a piece of wood
Cut away what ain’t musical
Then trim it up real good
Stretch some strings across it
Real tight so they can hum
Now make them sing together
In tune is what it's become
Need to find a bunch of words
Not big ones but make them count
Put 'em in some order
Eight beats long or thereabout
Time to tap out a melody
Use your foot or anything
Then do it on the guitar
Just make that flattop sing
Add some notes and chords
Now you're almost free
Make sure they go together
They call it the right key
Practice over and over
So no one else hear
Until it's just good enough
And they'll grin from ear to ear
You've made something from nothing
You did the best you could
Something you can hold and hear
From just a piece of wood
All the music's all the same
Just wood and strings and melody
Make ‘em fit all together
Then play it along steadily
Loud and soft and harsh and sweet
All the music’s all the same
Don’t worry if you can’t keep a beat
Just different pieces in the same game
