Old Man

Scott Whitby, 2022

I was gonna buy a guitar

Asked the old man for his advice

He said you better watch yourself

New strings are just as nice

But she was a black beauty

Three grand and she's all mine

Borrowed money and took her home

Felt like a victim of crime

Shiny as she was

Couldn't stay in tune

Three thousand dollars gone

All in an afternoon

Best advice I never took

To ignore what I was chasing

Slow down and think it through

Don't try to be amazing

Good comes in simple ways

Why you looking for something more

Slow down and think it through

Nobody else is keeping score

I found a girl seemed just like me

Asked the old man for his advice

I knew I better watch myself

Girls like that ain't always nice

But she was a brown eyed beauty

Like the ones in the picture shows

Ol' man said you got to take a chance

Don't ask me how I know

You might get her home

She might not stay in tune

But if you don't you'll never know

Was it love that afternoon?

Best advice I ever took

To not ignore what I was chasing

Slow down and think it through

It might be amazing

Good comes in simple ways

Always look for something more

Slow down and think it through

Nobody else is keeping score

You think you do but

You don't need a new guitar

He didn't say it quite like that

Play the one you got like a star

Then the old man told me

You don't always need a plan

You can't always figure it out

Just do the best you can

Sometimes you got to take a chance

Close your eyes and roll the dice

Then the old man said to me

Girl like that is worth the price
