The Red Model Car

swhitby8

Scott Whitby, 2022

Birthdays didn't matter

I was 5 and usually didn't either

That year I remember wondering

Would this year I get something?

Wayne came home, said "come outside"

He had decorated the bike l ride

My worn out old bike now reborn

It had streamers and a new horn

Wayne remembered my big day

Wasn't hard, why didn't they?

The only other time someone did

I got a model car, it was red

I think it made me tough

Never getting much

I think it made me strong

A little boy learning to long

All grown when I told Wayne

How odd it was, the hidden pain

That birthdays didn't matter

I told him though

That one matters now

That dressed up bike

It really matters now

I told him that

I said "I appreciate you"

And I told him about the model car

He said "Yeah...that was me too"
